Douglas Barnes was the commander at Hendon Flying Station and was killed on 1st June, 1915, during the first air raid by Zeppelins on London. He took off at 11.30pm on 31st May and gave chase for many miles and in various directions but eventually lost contact and on trying to land at 2.30am on 1st June, in the dark and mist he crashed.
